CULTIVAR PROVENANCE
The documentation infrastructure that secures a multi-decade genetic legacy across institutional time.
Cultivar provenance is the documentary infrastructure that connects a named genetic line to the breeder who developed it, the foundational accessions from which it descends, and the institutional record that survives the breeder. For agricultural plants, that infrastructure has existed for half a century under the UPOV Convention. For cannabis, until recently, it did not.
Gage Green Group has spent more than fifteen years building a documented breeding archive. The archive now consolidates into a four-layer institutional framework: a master cultivar registry, a verified descent tree, a corporate-genetics provenance bridge connecting each cultivar to its breeder of record and its commercial brand, and an independent verification layer that produces cryptographic attestations suitable for distributed-ledger deployment. The framework is designed to be source-grounded, independently verifiable, tamper-evident, and long-horizon.
International plant variety protection under UPOV-compliant frameworks has now opened formally to cannabis in multiple member states — Czech Republic, Netherlands, Italy, Germany, France, and Switzerland have admitted cannabis varieties for protection. The remaining gap is principally a United States gap, and that gap is policy-driven rather than architectural. The Gage Green Group framework is built to fit international UPOV-equivalent documentation criteria today and to be ready for any future U.S. implementation.
Beyond formal registration, cultivar provenance documentation serves operational purposes: licensing foundations that licensees can verify before entering an agreement, due-diligence assets in corporate transactions, dispute-resolution evidentiary bases, and brand differentiation in a market where cultivar provenance is frequently opaque. The federal-trademark heritage of the GAGE name — including the May 6, 2026 final judgment with prejudice in TTAB Opposition No. 91278331 — is part of this provenance picture.
